How I Work

Therapist and Coach Tess Brigham San Francisco California

HOW I WORK

I offer a unique approach that will help you create change that lasts.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a trusted advisor who’s a trained therapist AND coach?
Someone who understands the ins and outs of the human heart?
Someone with the experience to help you create a map from where you are to where you want to be?

When you work with me, you’ll get just that. I offer a unique approach that will help you create change that lasts.

I provide a hybrid of therapy and coaching which is a powerful process designed to create lasting change. I help people manage a host of concerns they might have around anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationships and identity, to name a few.

Together we will examine your beliefs by looking at their origins to begin to reshape how you see yourself and your world.

The goal of our sessions will be to help you:

  • Get “unstuck” (reduce depression and shift into consistent healthier habits)
  • Create momentum to achieve your career and personal goals
  • Develop new techniques and tools for stress and anxiety management
  • Set goals for the present and the future

Together we can help you better understand yourself and the choices you make and put into practice the permanent changes you want to make.

This is your opportunity to create new habits, to identify unhealthy patterns and to cultivate a new way of thinking about yourself and the people around you.

Practice the tools & techniques to manifest the chante

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF ME?

Great question! This is how I look at it - let’s say you sign up to meet with a personal trainer at your gym once a week for an hour. If that’s all you do, you probably won’t see major results. You might lose a pound or two and you may be a little more toned, but you probably won’t look like Kate Hudson in yoga pants.

Now let’s say you sign up with that personal trainer, go to the gym and workout on your own 3-4 days a week and change your diet. Then, you will see changes. Therapy works the same way. It’s up to you to practice the tools and techniques we discuss to manifest the change you want in your life.

HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?

Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes long and couple/family sessions are 90 minutes. I sometimes run over but I never charge for that, unless we agreed to have a longer session.

DO I HAVE TO COME IN WEEKLY?

I do not require that people come to therapy weekly. I want to meet you where you're at, not only emotionally, but also in terms of how you want to structure therapy/coaching. I usually recommend couples come in every other week because I want to give you both time to work on your homework. (Did I lose you at homework? Don't worry it's not like school. It's work you'll want to do.)

HOW LONG WILL WE WORK TOGETHER?

I completely understand that therapy is expensive and that life is busy and complicated. After the first session I'm usually able to say how often I think we would need to meet to in order to meet your specific goals. I never recommend more therapy/coaching than what is truly needed.

DO WE HAVE TO MEET IN PERSON?

If you are struggling with a busy schedule, privacy concerns, or the stress of meeting face to face, online or telephone counseling sessions are available. Research has shown that online therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face counseling.

HOW MUCH DOES THERAPY COST?

My fee for individuals is $150 per 50 minute session.

DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

I do not take insurance. Since I am a licensed therapist, I can provide you with a statement that you can take back to your insurance company for reimbursement.

WOW, TESS, THERAPY IS EXPENSIVE AND YOU DON'T TAKE INSURANCE, WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE YOU?

Glad you asked. After you saw my rate maybe your stomach dropped or maybe I'm the 6th therapist in the Bay Area you've researched, so my rate is not terribly shocking.

I want to explain why I charge what I charge and why I made the choice not to take insurance. I took insurance briefly during my career and it created only headaches and anxiety for me (and I'm supposed to be the sane one!).

Ultimately, I was spending so much time on the phone dealing with insurance companies that I didn't have time to focus on my clients and doing the things I need to do to insure you get the best care.

If I recommend a book to you, I've read it. If I recommend a podcast, I've heard it. Most of my free time is spent learning, growing and expanding my knowledge base. In addition, if you have an emergency and need to talk to me in between sessions, I'm happy to arrange time to talk with you (even on a weekend because that's usually when emergencies occur) and I don't charge you. If we e-mail in between sessions, I don't charge you. If I consult with a former therapist or a psychiatrist, no charge.

At the end of the day, I'm here to help you feel better. I'm not here to "nickel and dime" you every step of the way. If you're my client, I'm here for you.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THERAPY AND COACHING?

Therapy is a practice within the field of psychology that often includes diagnostic approaches to treatment according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Therapy is appropriate to help move you from a state of dysfunction to function, and as a general rule focuses on exploring the past as a way to manage your emotions in the present. Anyone can benefit from therapy to work through issues of grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, to name a few.

Coaching offers a different approach. Coaching can help guide personal development to help you work through present and future goals and life changes. Coaching is a dynamic process, like therapy, but the coach is more directive than therapy. Coaching can help anyone find direction and the strength to take action in their lives.
